Remote working is changing the ways we use to work. Most of us are introduced to this model due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Though many industries are now adapting to this module, the IT industry has been enjoying its benefits for years now.

Everything has its advantages and disadvantages. To most people, the benefits of remote work outweigh the downsides. On the other hand, others may find that the novelty of remote work is wearing off, revealing difficulties in teamwork and building relationships.

Building a solid relationship with remote employees is a bit difficult in comparison with on-site employees. Since there are no water cooler chats or lunches together, there is no harmony among the team. Even the employer needs to have a strong relationship with its employees.

This has a direct effect on the productivity and the morale of an employee. People need to communicate and gossip so that they don’t feel lonely. This leads us to an important question:

How to build a strong relationship with a remote employee?

Here are some powerful tips that few top remote agencies use to build a rapport with their employees.

#1 Make Room for Casual Conversations

Sometimes simply spending a couple of minutes on a coworker’s desk takes away a lot of stress. Human-to-human interaction plays a vital role in increasing productivity. Unfortunately, that is something not available in remote working.

But this certainly does not mean that there is no room for conversations in remote working. You can create a Slack or Skype group where people can interact and chat. It would give them space where they can chit chat anything other than work.

If you want to develop a long-term relationship with someone, you must indulge in this sort of chatter. It fosters a sense of belonging by instilling confidence and comradeship among participants.

#2 Be Accessible

As an employer, you need to be available for them when they need you. Keep yourself accessible to them. It’s impossible to establish a solid, valuable connection unless you make your presence felt or become transparent.

There would be a lot of things on your plate that you need to be looking out for. But if you are always busy and not available for your employees, they will never trust you.

Furthermore, it could lead to demotivation as employees might feel that they are not heard. Therefore, being accessible to your employees can be a great way to build a strong and trustful relationship.

Set aside time for your employees where you can listen to them. You can make a schedule where you can allocate a specific time for these meetings. Also, ensure that they have your undivided attention, keeping everything else on hold.

#3 Bring People Together

There is no replacement for face-to-face interaction. So, there would be nothing better than bringing people together for a gathering. Your employees would come together and know more about each other. They can connect and discuss things beyond work.

And if you don’t have the resources to bring them together, then a video session can be a great alternative as well. You can host a session where you and your employees can get to know more about each other. A short break might be enough to do the magic for you.

The more people will get to know each other, the better for you and your business. This way, they will start to trust each other and work much better together.

So, don’t consider this activity to be a time-waster as it can help your time get along with each other.

#4 Take An Interest In Your Employees

There is no rocket science in this. If you are being nice and getting to know more about your employees, they would appreciate it.

However, in doing so, make sure that your approach and your effort have honesty. Building a strong and trusting relationship should be based on honesty. It would be best if you did not force it on your employees; instead, it should come to you naturally.

Furthermore, encouraging and appreciating your employees would help you create a bond with them.

Try complimenting them when they do a good job. Recognizing and reward them if they are putting an extra effort at work. These small things play a significant role in boosting team morale. You would eventually see the results through an increase in productivity.

Being emotionally available to someone is a great approach to establish relationships. Take note of people’s movements and expressions. If you think that they need help, then check in on them. However, it might be something challenging to do in a remote working setting.

A person’s vibe in a face-to-face meeting is relatively easy to detect if they are stress or not. However, video conferencing has proven to be a reasonably successful choice, so it should not be too hard.

#5 Get Feedback

If you make your employees feel valued, you will build a much better relationship with them. Therefore, getting their feedback, advice, or even an opinion would make them feel important. Asking your employees for feedback shows that you are acknowledging their skills and knowledge.

Also, it is vital that you listen to people and remember their ideas and views. You are investing not just in their ideas but also in their relationship with them. When you can remember an earlier discussion, you demonstrate that you care about what your employees are saying and thinking.

This is a perfect basis for establishing a trusting and strong relationship.

Wrapping Up

The globe is still battling with the pandemic, making it clear that remote working is not going anywhere. It is here to stay. Therefore, the sooner you get used to it, the better it would be for you and your business.

Retaining valuable employees is equally important as hiring them. And without building a strong and trusting relationship, employee turnover is likely to remain high. So, to make the most out of remote working, it is vital to ensure that your remote employees are satisfied.

The model has been helping businesses in the IT industry for years now. And many sectors, such as education, customer service, etc., are now adopting this model. Though it might seem easy, building a remote team is not everyone’s cup of tea.

Bringing onboard the right people is essential so that you don’t have to go through the process repeatedly.
