Welcome to our video series “quick marketing and business tips” where we’re giving you actionable advice, tips, and recommendations, to grow your business today.

This is episode #36.

Let’s dive right in!

Episode 36: What to do when they contact you just to earn links from your site

Many business owners complain that they receive dozens or hundreds or even thousands of spam emails. 

And there is one category of spam emails where those who contact you try to earn links from your site.

And they usually send an email that goes like this…

I just visited your blog, I enjoyed your content, very valuable, you shared insights, or they might say I’m a regular visitor to your blog and I admire your work, and so on.

And then, they say that we have created content that covers this topic, and they might say we covered it from another angle, and we think that your audience would benefit from this content or they might say we have this landing page or we have this guide and we are asking for you to consider linking to our site…

And then, they might say something like this…

We will share it with our Twitter followers, for example, or we will mention you on our blog, or we will give you links from other sites and something crazy like that, or the majority of them don’t even offer anything at all. They ask you to give them links from your site. 

They know…why they do that?

Because they know SEO is important (search engine optimization), they know that link building is important, but this approach…the way that they approach you to earn links…at least, is not effective.

They are actually wasting time, valuable time that they could devote to doing other things…and this is the subject for our next episode – how to earn natural links, do link building the right way. 

So, don’t fall into the trap of giving them what they want, they won’t do anything for you, they just want to earn links, and in the past, I was always ignoring those emails, I was never responding but since we opened the doors to other contributors to our blog, I respond to those emails with something like that…

Thank you so much for contacting us, we are open to partnerships and these are the ways you can get featured on our blog.

You can guest post for free, you can sponsor content, you can buy ad space, and so on.

Now, a small percentage of those people will become sponsors and contributors, not all of them, just a small percentage, but…we gained exposure, we have rules…

This is how we take advantage of those requests, we turn some of those requests into an opportunity to create content for our site, and we have our own rules, we do not accept every guest post submission, in fact, we reject most of them, but that is subject for another discussion.

So this is what you can do…don’t ever give them links, and no one is giving them links.

This is why they are wasting time because who do you think is going to give them links?

New bloggers, new website owners that don’t have experience and so they are wasting so much valuable time, in getting links from sites that don’t have authority, that are not trustworthy in the marketplace yet, so, they are not making any progress.

But from your point of view, don’t link to any other site, it doesn’t add value, and if you don’t have a blog where you are accepting other contributors, you can think of other ways that you can partner up with those people that they contact you.

You need to be creative. You can think of other ways.

We found this way. 

You can think of your own ways to take advantage of those requests.
