Highlights

Mark analysed the latest strategies and tactics that the majority of companies utilise to help their customers go through the checkout process fast and without friction.

He discussed Klarna, Venmo, Buy Now Pay Later, FastLane (by PayPal), AppSwitch (a new product by PayPal), and many more 1-click and other experiences.

He explained that people in various countries use alternative payment methods, beyond the traditional, such as credit cards, Google Pay or Apple Pay.

For example, in the Netherlands, they use a service called iDEAL (a system that lets you pay through your local bank). In Brazil, they use Pix (an instant payment system, created by the Central Bank).

He shared his insights about the checkout experience by analysing strategies that reduce extra efforts and thinking for the customer at the critical moment of buying a product.

He shared examples for various industries and different checkout options.

He also discussed how companies are helping customers go through the checkout process in the least possible time. He showed examples of various pricing page options and how to apply them to any business.

Then, we watched an interview with Sam Bakker, who had some health issues and could not make it live online.

Sam shared his journey with his company and how they decided to make a change, a pivot and started charging subscriptions instead of lifetime offers.

It was a risky decision for them, as many existing customers were negative, but with careful analysis of the feedback, they were able to make the transition as smooth as possible. They acquired new customers who switched from competing companies and they did not lose many of their current ones.

Sam is also a customer of PayKickstart and explained the reasons for switching over to that platform.

Exciting interview, straight to the point, full of valuable insights for any business in any industry.

Then, we had a Q&A session. Mark answered various questions with one being more interesting that the others (for me) and it was about the checkout experience and payment options for high-risk industries, like MLM (multi-level marketing), credit repair and similar.

Highlights

Today’s workshop went on fire. Travis was in a roll and kept the momentum going from the first minute up until the very end of the meeting.

Today’s session was all about recurring revenue, subscriptions and memberships.

One of the most exciting but also demanding business models.

No easy tricks and hacks.

Only solid strategies, tactics and methods that are tested millions of times in various industries for many different kinds of products.

Travis shared a very powerful framework that goes beyond the traditional free-trial entry points for the majority of companies offering software, training, services and memberships.

It’s a different approach to recurring revenue. More predictable, way less risky than classical subscription models.

In a nutshell, it’s a system that helps you make customers ask for your subscription, on their own.

Travis discussed the subscription hamster wheel, which is the traditional model. A constant, expensive battle to acquire prospects who are conditioned to cancel.

High ad spend to get the game rolling, free trial signups, low conversions and finally, high churn rates.

Agree 100%. Many businesses suffer right now from this model, although they offer first-class products and services.

He says it’s like asking someone for a marriage on the first date. This is a core problem, you can’t ask someone to commit to monthly payments when they don’t even know if your solution works for them yet.

Things have changed; customer skepticism is at its peak.

Travis’s framework provides a new way and changes the classic cold ask with a logical next step.

He shared his 5-step blueprint for that matter:

  1. The “0 to 1” transformation
  2. Engineer the “Special” Moment
  3. Choose your recurring engine
  4. The irresistible graduate offer
  5. Scale with the flywheel effect

He then shared a plethora of examples in many industries, both from his companies and clients. All the examples make so much sense and I believe it’s a system that more and more brands will adopt in this space.

One of the most interesting workshops I’ve attended recently.

Can’t wait to test the framework in my business and I mean, right now. I don’t have a recurring offer but I’m always open to new models. Alternatively, I may apply one of the principles or steps of the framework to my current business model.

Highlights

A new guest speaker today, Aaron Krall. He was on fire. A glorious presentation specifically created for SaaS owners and aspiring founders.

It was all about proven strategies and tactics to turn more prospects into paying customers.

Main problems solved by Aaron’s method:

  • Rapidly rising costs to acquire customers (CAC)
  • Slow 6-12 month payback periods for ad spend
  • High churn rates
  • Complex products with tons of features
  • Increased competition
  • Profit margins
  • Spending years building something that is ultimately so complex that is extremely hard to sell
  • Raising money from VCs (Venture Capitalists)
  • Paying too much to acquire uncommitted users (This happens due to the rise of free trials)
  • Non being profitable for months
  • Needing 1000s of dollars as a runway
  • Supporitng 1000s of non-paying users (chatting, infrastructure costs, emotional sanity)
  • and much more

Aaron promiised to share a proven, high-velocity acquisition channel.

He explanied that the main problem for SaaS businesses is the cost of acquiring a new customer (CAC).

He uses a strategy that flips customer acquisition costs down to zero, segments exisiting features of the product to create irresistible front-end offers and a funnel structure that generates 1.8x to 2x ROAS (Return On Ad Spend) from cold traffic in 60 days.

A low-risk paid ads strategy that covers ad spend costs from day one. Plus, it works without slow and unpredictable marketing channels like SEO, content, video, social media, salesy cold emails and messages etc.

Aaron insists that the traditional front-end acquisition model is broken. Free trials take too long to convert (if they ever will), the average conversion rate is 15%, and most importantly, founders of SaaS need to excel at development, marketing, sales, nurturing, relationship building, churn retention and upselling, among other things.

Most SaaS companies experience the “Launch Spiral”. #1 Launch, #2 Get Users, #3 Hit a Wall, #4 Start Building Again and repeat the cycle until you abandon.

Aaron’s method is called “The Lifetime Ladder”.

He analysed the core mechanism of the method but did not have much time to go really deep, absolutely logical and expected.

He also shared a list of criteria to determine if a SaaS product is a good fit for this particular method, tactics to turn your offer into something way more irresistible, examples of successful SaaS companies, a quick walkthrough of a product he co-founded with a client (the ad, the landing page the checkout page, funnel and profit levers).

A huge session, packed with so much value.

Highlights

A huge, very important topic for any business. Fraud and chargebacks exist and we better be prepared than deal with this kind of problem when it happens.

Mark and Mark discussed the checkout experience and systems laying out what we must have in place before acceptung payments.

They highlghted how critical policy visibility is and when banks side with the cardholder.

They analysed 3D secure and when it makes sense.

They discussed behavioural tracking vs. hard rules, friendly fraud and when it’s broken communication (not fraud), billing descriptors as a defense tool, proactive communication, the benefits of fraud prevention, what works in fraud defense, what to fix first and so much more.

Takeaways:

  • Disputes will happen, have a system in place
  • Communicate proactively
  • Hidden or vague policies lose disputes automatically.
  • 3D Secure (3DS) is a tool, not a cure-all
  • No single tool solves fraud
  • Monitor behaviour, not just payments

Highlights

Mark revealed a bunch of updates, upgrades, new features and systems that have been added to the platform recently.

New features are being added at this moment and will continue to roll out for a few months more.

It’s a transitional period for the platform and Mark showed up fired up, excited and anxious as well.

He discussed retargeting and how important it is to any business. Retargeting happens when we target people who already expressed interest in our business. These are warm leads, not cold traffic and they are converting way better.Mark mentioned 2-3X higher, I believe is way more.

He gave plenty of actionable advice here. Here are a few examples: Bought the base product? Remind them of the upsell. Are they on a trial? Remind them before it ends.

Now, retargeting helps before the sale but the biggest leaks happen after.

Next topic: Subscription management. Getting paid once is good, getting paid repeatedly changes everything. That’s a major factor driving business growth. Having a recurring revenue system.

Not all businesses deal with it successfully, though. It’s where most billing systems start to break. Most business owners take subscriptions as billing, but it’s a relationship. It has to do with expectations, timing and flexibility. It’s more than just charging a card.

He explained how the new platform has been built around the full subscription lifecycle (from the first signup to upgrades, renewals and retention).

He helped us understand how customers feel when they purchase a product that comes with a recurring billing system. These are not just recurring charges for them, they are recurring decisions.

He analysed failed payments, expired cards, quiet cancellations, bank declines, authentication issues and more.

He mentioned that growht does not die form lack of sales but from leaks, many times invisible which you can’t spot before it’s too late.

If you have a subsctiption-based business, don’t assume that revenue is stable. To have stability, you need a recovery system in place.

He highlighted that the new platform trates retention as a system, not a reaction because waiting is expensive.

The platform has pre-dunning, prepaid cards and authorisations to reduce failed payments before they happen. Also, there’s a smart retry algorithm running in the background for failed payments, retrying them at various times throughout the day to reveal the best options for vendors. This is huge and you don’t do it manually, it is being done automatically.

He discussed multi-touch communication, in-app notifications, payment recovery alerts and shared some statistics. The platform has already helped vendors recover 13M in revenue that would have been lost without these automated systems.

He walked us through the custom billing portal, where customers can manage their own billing and thus, it reduces frustration, you get less support tickets and churn drops.

Those small moments of control make a big difference over time.

Next topic, retention. It’s starts by understanding your customers. It’s not about trapping them. It’s about where your business can improve. Retention is a system, not a feature.

They have a cancellation saver sequence saving around 25% of customer who wanted to leave. You can’t save everyone but 25% saves, I will take it. There are automated surveys, pre-cancellation notifications and much more.

Next topic, affiliate management. There are brand-new affiliate request pages designed for transparency, a dashboard to upload marketing materials for your partners, to create real-time leaderboards and motivate them and to create partner contracts, detailed analytics, a completely revamped marketplace where vendors and affiliates connect),  and a new PayKickstart Wallet.

Next topic, fraud and chargeback protection. The real cost? Dispute fees, nto returned processing fees, additional dispute fees to fight new policies), lost revenue, internal time and labour, reputation damage and stress. Not to mention, higher processing rates from card brands, reserve holds and delayed payouts, account monitoring or termination, etc.

The platforms offers a protection system built into the revenue system. It protects before disputes happen, you have time to act before chargebacks are filled, there are automated risk signals and controls and you have visibility through the entire lifecycke. Behavioural signals, risk-scoring, flexible controls based on risk tolerance and more.

Huge improvements, to say the least. All the tools a business needs to scale with confidence in one platform.
