I’m so excited today and I wanna share my insights from a brilliant book I’ve just finished reading. All about leadership, impact, growth, and making this world a better place.
It could not be more timely as this is the main theme on the blog these days. I discussed a few days ago if money is all that it counts and how we can impact the world as entrepreneurs, and why this moment in time provides a unique opportunity to help change things.
And here’s how I came across this book. I received an email from my friend and partner, Matt McWilliams, an award-winning affiliate manager, who invited me to download a book by his friend, Mark Miller, a leadership coach and instructor, read it, and if I enjoy it to share my opinion with you.
And so I did read the book “Smart Leadership” and I am thrilled to share my experience right away. Let’s dive right in!
Mark Miller “Smart Leadership”
Book Review

Mark Miller’s Background
Hey, I’m Mark. I’ve been encouraging and equipping leaders for over 40 years, and I’m thrilled to join you on your journey.
I know you are busy, and I also know the demands on you as a leader have probably never been higher. Here’s what leaders from around the world are telling me: The pressure to perform can be overwhelming. The daily challenge is to do more with less and do it faster and better. The ongoing balancing act between work and the rest of your life is daunting. The tension created by a 24/7 “always on” world makes creating a sustainable life a real trick. Does any of this sound familiar? I understand… I live and lead in the same world you do. However, even in the face of these challenges, I believe you, your team, and your organization can thrive!
My career at Chick-fil-A began more than 40 years ago as an hourly team member in one of the local restaurants. Shortly thereafter, I become the 16th corporate employee — my first job: working in the warehouse. Since that day, I have worked all across the business, from starting our Corporate Communications group and our Quality & Customer Satisfaction Team to leading in Restaurant Operations, Training & Development, Leadership Development and more! Currently, I serve as Vice President of High Performance Leadership at Chick-fil-A.
For the last 20 years, I have focused much of my time on serving leaders, helping them grow themselves, their teams, and their organizations. In addition to my role at Chick-fil-A, I’ve also had the privilege to teach and lead in not-for-profit organizations domestically and globally. Although the context is different in every organization, the problems have common roots and so do the solutions. Along the way, I have been fortunate to author (and co-author) a few books – nine and counting. Today, more than a million books are in print in 25+ languages. My approach to writing has always been to find what is true in principle and figure out how to make it applicable to the real world. I look forward to our journey together unlocking your full potential as a High Performance Leader.

I’ve just finished reading a brilliant book. It’s all about leadership, experiencing exponential growth in your impact, and unlocking an inner power to your greatest potential in order to form a virtuous cycle of life-giving insight, energy, and vitality.
Sounds interesting?
Take this journey with me.
Mark Miller, international bestselling author, vice president at Chick-fil-A, has just released a brand new book. With more than a million books in print in 25+ languages, Mark is a legend. His work is praised by top industry leaders, executives, and entrepreneurs and he’s been encouraging and equipping leaders for over 40 years.
This brand new book is called…”Smart Leadership”.
The main slogan is this: four simple choices to scale your impact.
And these choices are:
- Smart choice #1: confront reality to stay grounded in truth and lead from a position of strength. Mark analyzes why the best leaders choose to confront their reality.
- Smart choice #2: grow capacity to meet the demands of the moment and the challenges of the future. Mark analyzes why the best leaders choose to grow their capacity.
- Smart choice #3: fuel curiosity to maintain relevance and vitality in a changing world. Mark analyzes that the only smart choice is to continuously fuel curiosity.
- Smart choice #4: create change today to ensure a better tomorrow. The ability to create change is the essence of leadership. He says for that matter…
Creating change must be one of the choices as without it, there can be no true leadership.
He explains how these Smart Choices work together to form a lifeline for you and your leadership, a virtuous cycle.
Mark is a brilliant character, author, and leader. A wise man that sees the light in the tunnel and helps you get out of there well-equipped and ready to level up your game.
Leaders face monumental challenges, deal with problems, issues, and help others find their way.
It’s not an easy task to be a leader, it’s not even a task. It’s a mission.
Mark’s writing reflects calmness and joy on me.
I learned a ton and that’s only an understatement.
There are practical strategies and tactics that we can put to use right away. There is tangible information we can take advantage of to become greater leaders.
There’s an army of methods, resources, and tools at your disposal.
But as Mark says…
Tools are interesting devices…they are full of latent possibilities waiting to be directed and their potentials released, but tools rarely work by themselves.
You must provide the intention, direction, and human touch to release their power.
Mark knows his stuff, you will immediately feel his leading power just by reading the first paragraphs.
There are troubleshooting guides and various sets of questions to help us put theory into practice.
Now, the book is in the pre-order phase. there are 2 bonuses bundled by Mark if you get the book before Jan 11th. These bonuses are not available in bookstores.

Highlights
Book Intro:
It’s all about our choices.
Your choices determine your impact.
Mark explains why it’s so difficult to make wise choices. Not all choices have equal value.
He mentions the book “Effective Executive” by Peter Drucker and how it changed his life once and for all.
Effectiveness can be and must be learned.
“Smart Leadership” is a book about effectiveness, adding value, and creating more impact.
He also explains how the book is organized.
Mark’s intent: to stir in you a renowned desire to escape the daily challenges that are limiting your impact and eroding your quality of life.
He goes deep into analyzing why our choices matter so much.
The balance of this book is organized around the 4 smart choices. There are introductory sections and sections with best practices, filled with strategies and tactics you want to try out. There are also ideas for immediate action.
Mark promises…
For the last twenty years, my team and I have been talking to leaders. We have interviewed hundreds of them. These women and men represent some of the best organizations in the world, including Apple, Southwest Airlines, Google, the Navy SEALs, Zappos, Starbucks, FedEx, the Mayo Clinic, Disney, Clemson football, Cirque du Soleil, and many more.
In addition to this qualitative work, we have surveyed thousands of leaders and individual contributors, invested untold hours on desk research, and conducted multiple in-field validation studies with real leaders, their employees, and their customers.
We collected a mountain of data, actions, priorities, habits, and disciplines from leaders around the world; we also heard about successes, failures, and missed opportunities. We then added the collective wisdom of some very smart professionals and legendary consultants. All of this then coalesced with my personal leadership journey. It has been an amazing ride! From these many threads of inquiry and experience, we have created a tapestry of insight, inspiration, and action every leader can use to scale his or her impact.
In the subtitle of this book, we deliberately chose the word scale when referring to your impact. I want to help you experience exponential growth in your impact in a very short period of time. The four Smart Choices we’re about to explore, if made consistently, can deliver on this audacious promise.
Smart Leadership is not dependent on your IQ, your education, or your role or level in your organization. The choices are not bound by situation or circumstance. Therefore, these choices are within reach for every leader at every level. Smart Leaders make Smart Choices.
Just as Indy surmised when looking for a life-giving cup, often the simplest is the most significant. The truth is these simple choices may well give your leadership the new life you’ve been searching for. Simple, however, should never be confused with easy. Focus and diligence will be required to consistently make Smart Choices and become a Smart Leader.
I honestly believe each of these Smart Choices will stand the test of time, not because they are flashy, gilded, or adorned with precious stones but because they are simple and based on timeless principles. I think that is good news for you, me, and every leader on the planet.
Here’s what I will promise you: There is inherent value in each of the Smart Choices—untold power you can harness and deploy at will. There is even greater potential in the choices collectively; together they form a virtuous cycle of life-giving insight, energy, and vitality. As you learn to make these four choices your default response on a daily basis, your life, leadership, and legacy will be
transformed forever.
Mark opens the section “Swimming in Quicksand” with a quote by Henri Nouwen…
“If I were to let my life be taken over by what is urgent, I might very well never get around to what is essential.”
Well, this is a quote I have to read every day I guess.
Mark shows what kind of skill set leadership requires. He also states what happens when you are assigned the role of the leader in an organization and how pressure and conflicts may get you in the wrong direction.
One thing is for sure; leaders everywhere face monumental challenges on a daily basis.
Mark shows a way to escape the quicksand metaphor.
He says for that matter…
The quicksand metaphor works well in several ways. First, we really don’t see it coming. People in quicksand arrive there by accident. No one plans to go there. Neither do you and I plan to have our careers derailed and our impact blunted by forces seemingly out of our control, but it can happen.
Mark analyzes what happens if meetings are not executed well, however, they can become the embodiment, and a tangible symbol, of the quicksand we are trying to avoid and he discusses the disadvantages of running poor meetings.
Then, Mark shares some interesting statistics about digital communications.
We tap, swipe, and click our phones 2,617 times per day.
The average smartphone user unlocks his or her phone 150 times per day.
We send or receive ninety-four texts per day, on average.
Globally, there are twenty-three billion text messages sent per day! This number continues to increase at a staggering rate the number per day doubling during a recent twenty-four-month stretch.
Then, we are amazed by some other stats about social media.
Adults spend an average of eleven hours, twenty-seven minutes per day connected to media.
Instagram has five hundred million active daily users. More than fifty billion photos have been uploaded on the platform so far. An estimated 71 percent of US businesses use Instagram.
YouTube users upload more than three hundred hours of new content per minute. Let me help you with the math—that’s 18,000 hours of new content per hour, and 432,000 hours of new content per day! Almost five billion videos are watched on YouTube every single day. The average viewing session lasts more than forty minutes.
He mentions the devastating consequences of constant distractions every office worker faces in today’s busy world. And why we have to deal with growing complexity in all areas of our business.
Mark continues to amaze us by his point of view on “success”. He promises to share strategies to overcome complacency. He analyzes “inertia”, “fatigue”, “fear”, “aimlessness”, and “circumstances”.
Another surprise awaits us in the next section where Mark is discussing who the real villain is.
He then presents 3 scenarios that he saw repeatedly coming as a response from leaders to fight their “Quicksand” and he clearly states his favorite approach.
At the end of the chapter, he invites us to share our top 3 obstacles, our quicksand with him. So brilliant!
In the section, “Your real superpower”, he shares another powerful quote, this time by Victor Frankl…
“Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose a response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”
He shares a fact that every human being on the planet has at least one superpower—the power to make choices.
He discusses the power of choices and the benefits of making them but he says that there is a dark side to it as well.
Choices are the most important topic you rarely think about.
He then shares a few findings of the mystery and magic behind our choices.
He discusses emotions, values and beliefs, rewards, cognitive bias, past experiences, fear, individual differences, and the environment.
And here’s something that sounds unorthodox but it’s true.
On the pressure we can feel from others, one classic study conducted by psychologist Solomon Asch found that 75 percent of adults would give an answer they knew to be incorrect if others in the group were giving the same incorrect answer, in order to fit in.
Then, he reviews 4 types of voices we encounter on a regular basis: trivial, costly, routine, and smart.
Smart choices should be your primary focus. And this is the focus of this book.
Smart choice #1: confront reality to stay grounded in truth and lead from a position of strength. Mark analyzes why the best leaders choose to confront their reality.
Smart choice #2: grow capacity to meet the demands of the moment and the challenges of the future. Mark analyzes why the best leaders choose to grow their capacity.
Smart choice #3: fuel curiosity to maintain relevance and vitality in a changing world. Mark analyzes that the only smart choice is to continuously fuel curiosity.
Smart choice #4: create change today to ensure a better tomorrow. The ability to create change is the essence of leadership. He says for that matter…
Therefore, creating change must be one of the choices as without it, there can be no true leadership.
He explains how these Smart Choices work together to form a lifeline for you and your leadership, a virtuous cycle.
In the section “Smart Choice #1 – Confront Reality”, Mark shares another brilliant quote by Max Dupree…
“The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality.”
Mark shares an incredible story of Socrates with one of his new students that I admit I was not aware of.
At some point, Socrates responded, “When you want knowledge as badly as you want air, you will find it.”
He then mentions why leaders have trouble confronting reality.
He describes some very tangible things we can do to make good on our choice.
He helps us to narrow our focus, check the data, ask challenging questions, see for ourselves, and how to find fresh eyes and what to expect from them.
He shows us what to do with a personal board of directors, mentors, coaches, consultants, and peer groups. He explains why never stopping pursuing your goals is a fundamental principle of successful leadership.
He then assigns an exercise to help us get started in the right direction.
In the chapter, “Check the mirror”, he shares a quote by Socrates…
“The unexamined life is not worth living.”
He shares the amazing story of Kristen Hadeed and what she learned…
Leadership is not permission to do less but signing up to do more.
This chapter is filled with practical strategies and tactics for evaluating and improving your leadership.
He helps us ask the right questions to make it happen, he shows a way to own our strengths and weaknesses, how to close gaps and seize the opportunity, how to build a better version of ourselves, and he assigns an exercise.
In the chapter, “Review your crew”, he shares a quote by John Maxwell…
“Your success will be determined by those closest to you.”
He gives some examples of the sports world that will help us understand why assembling a great team is extremely important.
He says…
We live in a team-based world and these examples remind us of the boundless potential available when talented women and men work together toward a common goal.
Great teams are the product of leadership, strategic intent, and thoughtful design. No team drifts to greatness—they are built for success.
He then analyzes how to evaluate your team and he shares a table illustrating the leader’s role compared to the leadership team’s role.
Then, he describes ways to discover how strong your team is and he assigns an exercise.
In the chapter, “grow capacity”, he shares a quote by Henry Ford…
“There is no man living who isn’t capable of doing more than he thinks he can do.”
Capacity-building endeavors impact our world to this day—they make the impossible possible.
He discusses the invention of the wheel, Henry Ford’s 1908 Model T, and he gives some examples of today’s world.
He describes how to start with yourself, how to clarify your role as a leader, how to clean up your calendar, how to leverage technology, how to create margin, how to take care of yourself, and how to design for scale.
He introduces a story that will help you find your role.
The potential of an ever-expanding future with unparalleled growth, opportunity, and capacity probably sounds good to most of you but there’s a catch. He then maps out a few other stumbling blocks to look out for.
At the end of the chapter, he assigns an exercise.
In the chapter, “Stop and think”, he shares a quote by Stephen Covey…
“Public victory is always preceded by private victory.”
He shows you ways to make time to lead, what is our “time machine”, and how to create margin in your world.
He gives ideas to jumpstart your thinking: focus days, morning ritual, daily review, personal retreats, and after-action reviews.
He then goes back to Victor Frankl and he explains why his insight is one for the ages, and he assigns an exercise.
In the chapter, “expand your energy”, he shares a quote by Benjamin Franklin…
“Energy and persistence conquer all things.”
He shares the story of one of his friends that changed his life forever.
He clearly states that “energy” is useful for everything.
He shows ways to help you conduct an energy audit, how to own your energy, and how to create an energy management plan.
At the end of the chapter, he assigns an exercise.
In the chapter, “Fuel curiosity”, he shares a quote by Albert Einstein…
“I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious.”
He shares a story of what happened in 2003 when he met Fergal Quinn.
Leaders are born this way.
He gives a set of questions to help you make the smart choice.
He helps you make the case for curiosity, and how to rediscover it if you’ve lost it, and how to capture the magic and the mundane.
All these smart choices work together, none of them is more important.
At the end of the chapter, he assigns an exercise.
In the chapter, “Ask, don’t tell”, he shares another quote by Albert Einstein…
“The important thing is to not stop questioning.”
I live by this quote. Yes, I am a doubter, a hard believer, but this attribute really helped me in my life and business. Nothing should be taken for granted. No one’s opinion should be accepted before we question it using our standards and metrics.
Back to the book:
Mark introduces us to Jim Collins, a global thoughts leader in the field of leadership.
He explains why questions matter so much, and how to put your questions to work for you and your goals. He gives you various sets of questions to move forward.
He shows you how to ask better questions, a section to be read very carefully.
He also shares some of his favorite questions.
At the end of the chapter, he assigns an exercise.
In the chapter, “Talk with strangers”, he shares another quote by Mark Twain…
“Wisdom is the reward you get for a lifetime of listening when you would have rather talked.”
I think these quotes are hand-picked because they illustrate the role of the leader precisely.
Mark talks about Brian Grazer, who you may not know, but you’re probably familiar with his work. He has produced several billion dollars’ worth of Hollywood blockbusters including Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind, American Gangster, and many more.
The big question you should be making is this; who do you want to talk to?
Then, Mark helps you gain an audience, maximize your time, and shows you what happens after the conversation.
At the end of the chapter, he assigns an exercise.
In the chapter, “Create Change”, he shares a quote by Peter Drucker…
“The best way to predict the future is to invent it.”
He shares the story of Ruben Gonzalez who decided he wanted to be an Olympian.
As a student and practitioner of leadership for more than four decades, Mark cannot count the times he’s been asked about the definition of leadership.
He shows you ways to use the force and how to focus on control.
He shares a growth mindset and he invites you to start training.
He shares the story of Geoffrey Canada who grew up believing in Superman.
At the end of the chapter, he assigns an exercise.
In the chapter, “See the unseen”, he shares a quote by Steve Jobs…
“The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.”
For me, these people are not crazy. They are just more unorthodox if you will.
He discusses Napoleon Bonaparte who is widely held as one of the best generals of all time.
He analyzes why “vision” matters.
I already discussed the most common characteristics of successful entrepreneurs and the most important one is having a vision.
He shows you ways to find vision and he helps you again with a set of questions.
But the chapter would be incomplete if Mark did not show a way to cast the vision.
At the end of the chapter, he assigns an exercise.
In the chapter, “Sharpen your tools”, he shares a quote by Thomas Fuller…
“All things are difficult before they are easy.”
He shares what happened in 1997, when Captain Michael Abrashoff reported to the USS Benfold, an 8,600-ton guided-missile destroyer in the US Navy’s Pacific Fleet.
He explains that change is hard but he provides us with tools.
There’s also a troubleshooting guide and at the end of the chapter, he assigns an exercise.
In the chapter, “Be Smart”, he shares insights from the movie series Harry Potter.

My Final Review
Mark is a brilliant character, author, and leader. A wise man that sees the light in the tunnel and helps you get out of there well-equipped and ready to level up your game.
Leaders face monumental challenges, deal with problems, issues, and help others find their way.
It’s not an easy task to be a leader, it’s not even a task. It’s a mission.
And so leaders have to overcome way more obstacles than other people to reach their high goals.

There are troubleshooting guides and various sets of questions to help us put theory into practice.
It’s extremely important to start implementing this new knowledge in your business and life because information without implementation is just procrastination.
Mark covers all these aspects of leadership with reverence, he goes so deep to pave the way and open doors of opportunities for every leader in this world.
I believe these 4 Smart Choices can transform the way you lead your team, organization, even your family and yourself.
These 4 Smart Choices should be your roadmap to improving your leadership skill set, honing your leading voice, and becoming an authority in your field.
These choices can be applied in all areas of life and business.
These choices are the key to becoming a legend, someone people remember throughout the years.
A book to be read at least 10 times to fully understand the potential and make use of this army of strategies and tactics.
PLUS
I wanna highlight a phrase that got me smiling and thinking for a while;
Near the end of this book, Mark says…
I realize how difficult it is to consistently make the right choice. I could write another book on my poor choices, but you wouldn’t want to read that one. But when we mess up, we can stand back up and make our next, better choice.
